Arizona and Utah
"Without enough wilderness America will change. Democracy, with its myriad personalities and increasing sophistication, must be fibred and vitalized by regular contact with outdoor growths — animals, trees, sun warmth and free skies — or it will dwindle and pale." - Walt Whitman
About the Trip
In January 2016, I decided to take a solo trip to Montana and Wyoming because I had always dreamed of visiting Glacier NP, Yellowstone NP and my newly found love for Grand Teton NP. I drove a little less than 2,700 miles in 15 days through four states and it forever changed my idea of adventure.
I knew I wanted to go on a similar trip this fall but I had bigger plans to explore six National Parks instead of just three. As I was preparing to take the trip, my dad expressed some interest in possibly going as well (probably after receiving some pressure from my mother). Of course I jumped at the opportunity because traveling solo in the backwoods can sometimes be a bit interesting.
Together, we decided that we would start in Phoenix and travel to Sedona, the Grand Canyon NP, Lake Powell, Zion NP and Bryce Canyon NP before dropping him off in St. George, UT to fly home. After this I would continue alone and explore Capital Reef NP, Canyonlands NP, Arches NP and Monument Valley.
I was thrilled that my dad would want to join me for 8 days and experience a number of amazing spots across Arizona and Utah.
Camping is not something he specifically enjoys, so we got him set-up in the back of a Ford Expedition with a thick air mattress, battery powered fan and some custom screens that provide venation through the windows. As we begin this trip I pray that I get us lost on a backroad somewhere in the middle of BFE.
