The Best and Worst Idea of My Life
Before coming to Glacier National Park, I whitewater rafted twice. Once in Rocky Mountain National Park, CO and once in Denali National Park, AK. So clearly I wanted to step it up a notch.
So why not try whitewater kayaking?!
The company I booked with was awesome. Jess from Wild River Adventures called me when I was in Missoula to help me book my half-day trip. I explained my previous experience with rafting and we both agreed to go with the kayak.
To say that I nearly died would be an understatement. About halfway through the trip we came up on a class four rapids called bone crusher. As I approached the rapids, I knew this one was going to be the worst one yet. I got three quarters of the way through and was pinned between a boulder and a huge rock wall. The pressure of the river current flipped me out of the kayak and swallowed me in one gulp. While I was underwater with no access to oxygen, I started body slamming boulders and swallowing massive amounts. This went on for 8 seconds because the current would not allow me to surface. Each time my body slammed into a boulder I would swallow more and more water. Eventually, I popped up downstream and was dragged into another boat by two guys. I threw up most of the water caught my breath and got back into my kayak. I have never been so terrified in my life.
